mr16 bulbs for garden lighting.
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:12:53 PM »
I'm putting in some garden lighting and have some mr16 fittings, I've calculated I'll need about 13 along the path. And they'll be at either waist or handrail height so not too high above the path.

Any recommendations on which ones to use? I don't want them so bright that they'll blind people's night vision but I need people to be able to see where they are going.

Jam,
Sounds like a great project. The funny thing is that I have recently done a similar project. At my house, I have installed macrocarpa sleepers around a garden at ground level which runs up the side of a path. In the sleepers I have installed Chrome Eyelid G4 fittings which shine the light out over the path, but the eyelid stops the light from shining up at peoples eyes.
The G4 bulbs are the Cool White G4 bulbs from LEDstuff, and they run from a 12V power supply. Only the 12V power is running outside so it is all safe. See the image below.

Do you think you could do something like this? What will the lights be going into (stone wall, brick, wooden retaining wall, etc)?

We've already got a bunch of nice mr16 copper fittings that look like this:

and this:

I've also got a nice transformer from wellforces that has an adjustable output voltage to help offset the voltage drop for the 40m that I'm going to have to run these.

Each light is going to have to cover 3 to 4 meters of path/steps. Which mr16 lamps would you suggest?

Ahh now I see :D. Ok, well I would either go with the 3.6W MR16 or the 4W MR16. The 3.6W is the closest to a standard size, so depending on the fitting this may or may not be a factor. The 4W has a wider spread, but costs a bit more, and would probably be overkill in my opinion.
The 3.6W bulbs will consume much less power than a halogen, so you should not have too much voltage drop.

Great. I've ordered one of each of those and will test them all.
